Size Matters – Choose upfront the size of the photos you wish to print. They come in many shapes and forms, from wallet-sized (2 1/2 x 3 1/2-inch) to album/scrapbook-ready (4 x 6-inch or 5 x 7-inch) prints. Match the paper to fit. Alternately, choose a standard letter-sized (8 ½ x 11-inch) paper and use the Windows XP Photo Printing Wizard to squeeze several smaller images onto one sheet.

Paper – The key to professional looking photos is using quality photo paper and that your printer knows it’s using it. When printing photos make sure you use high quality photo paper specific for the type of printer you have. If you are using an Inkjet printer there is different options and there are also different types for Laser printers. It is important that you printer knows you’ve uploaded such paper so it can optimize the output so you can have the quality looking photos you are looking for.

To change your settings enter "Printer Setup" or "Printer Preferences" mode; it should be available from most applications' "Print" dialogs. Use the option that says "Media Type" or "Paper Type". Select the type of paper that most accurately matches the paper to be used. If you are not using paper sold by the printer manufacturer, you need to experiment with the settings.

If you use high quality paper not only do you get great prints but that last longer. Consider using acid-free paper or archival paper that ensures they last quite a bit. The great news that now depending on the brand of the paper, the quality and storage conditions photos “could” last from 50 to 100 years.
